Health Initiatives Mission (HIM) strives to guard African children against female genital mutilation (FGM), give aid and comfort to victims of FGM, protect families from Malaria, and provide clean water. HIM accomplishes these goals through health services, education, and sustainable collaboration.

Women's Health

​Female Genital Mutilation

​FGM is violation of basic human rights yet it remains a pervasive rite-of-passage for girls and young women. FGM leads to many deaths due to excessive bleeding, infection, and birth complications that result from scar tissue. Because of FGM, most infants (especially firstborn) die during delivery due to prolonged labor.

​Fistula
FGM frequently results in tears in the bladder and rectum called Fistula. Women with fistula are condemned to a life of poverty, isolation, and hopelessness because of the smell of urine and feces. Although they do not choose FGM, they are blamed for their condition.

​Community Education and prevention​
HIM partners with local community leaders and Maternal Healthcare stakeholders to educate the Pokot community about the dangers of FGM and to adapt and promote alternative, sustainable cultural practices.

Healthy Children

Malaria

​Malaria is a matter of life and death for Children in the Pokot region, where only 1 in 3 children lives to see their 5th Birthday. Malaria also causes anemia in pregnant women resulting in stillbirths and low birth weights.

HIM works to reverse this trend by providing education to expectant mothers and parents with under 5 years old and mosquito nets treated with insecticides.

Clean Water

Well Digging and Management

Access to clean water is crucial health concern in the Pokot Community. Contaminated water is a leading cause of illness in Pokot children. Collecting water, exclusively the job of women, is often hazardous and involves walks of as many as 20 miles each way. Drilled Wells with Hand Pumps are the best alternative.

HIM is fundraising among individuals and organizational partners to purchase drilling equipment in order to provide a long term solution for the water problem affecting the Pokot Tribe. With access to drilling equipment, the Pokot community can construct and manage clean water wells for drinking, cooking, agriculture and hygiene.
